National Apprenticeship Week (9th – 16th March) was marked with a celebration in honour of 27 employees at Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), who attained their Level 2 NVQ on a Team Leadership apprenticeship course run by JB Management.
The course offers in-work learning to develop employees’ English, maths and IT skills with broad applications in the business sector and wider economy. Of those who started the course 93% achieved the qualification, which is significantly higher than the 54% threshold for OFSTED recommended courses.
Great Northern Passenger dervice director Keith Jipps at the celebratory lunch in Moorgate summed up the value of the apprenticeship scheme for employees and GTR, saying: “The most important quality you need to lead and develop a team is the ability to develop yourself. We’re delighted that almost everyone who started the course completed it and we will therefore be making this course available to employees annually.
“In-work learning and apprenticeships enhance our business hugely, for our team leaders who have earned a national qualification, for our employees who will receive confident leadership from their team leaders and for customers.”
Valerie, a team leader at Gatwick Airport station who took the course, said: “It’s a great addition to my CV. After moving here from France I’ve built up over 10 years of customer service experience and now I have a qualification that puts an important feather in my cap. An NVQ for which you have to pass exams in English, maths and IT definitely gives you the skills and the confidence to move forward in your career.”
