Southern Manufacturing & Electronics returns to FIVE, Farnborough, on February 12th and 13th 2014. According to the most recent MAS Barometer, UK manufacturing is coming back to dependable growth. With many manufacturers reportedly once again being prepared to invest in plant and equipment, exhibitions are becoming focal points of procurement activity.
According to the show organisers, despite a few hard years for business, the interest in Southern Manufacturing & Electronics has never really decreased. Now, with the economic climate seemingly quickening its tempo, 2014 promises additional growth. A further 100 new participants are expected by the time the show opens in February, including high profile companies like Olympus and Brother.
The show is actually three shows in one: Southern Manufacturing, Southern Electronics and Auto-Aero – the newest section of the show, dedicated to specialist automotive/aerospace precision engineering. Such co-location allows visitors to discover a wide variety of products and services in a short time period.
There will be plenty to interest those involved in both process engineering and process control. For example, the the Electronics area of the show will include components and sub-assemblies such as encoders, controllers, drives and sensors of all descriptions. Delta Line will demonstrate a variety of motors, stepper motors, customised gearboxes, encoders and intelligent drives. In addition, Monitran will be showcasing its recently announced intrinsically safe sensors. Certified to ATEX and IECEx Group II, the sensors are suitable for measuring vibration levels and temperature in areas where explosive gases, liquids or dust may be present.
Still on the theme of sensing, Micro Epsilon will present its range of sensor technologies, including non-contact eddy current and laser displacement sensors, infrared temperature sensors, thermal imaging cameras, draw wire sensors and colour recognition sensors. To encourage visitors to interact with the products, the stand will stage a number of ‘live’ working demonstrations, while visitors will also be invited to take part in the ‘Measure your Strength’ challenge and be in with the chance of winning an iPod mini.
Other highlights include Bernstein’s contactless safety monitoring switch, CSMS, which ensures compliance with ISO?14119:2013, Vision Engineering’s Xpress ultra fast video measuring system within the field of view, and Harting’s range of integrated solutions for the smart factory, such as interconnectivity products, RFID hardware and software and connectors for wire-to-board and board-to-board interfaces. Acorn Industrial Services will show a variety of linear motion and actuation systems.
The show will also welcome many first time exhibitors and international companies. Demonstrating for the first time is Ondrives, a producer of gears and transmission system components. Travelling from Spain to take part in the show, AMES SA provides a range of structural sintered parts, soft-magnetic parts, gears, self-lubricating bearings, filters & porous metallic components. Takachi Electronic Enclosures, are coming all the way from Japan in order to take part.
Of Southern’s major international exhibitors, most return to Farnborough in 2014, including Fanuc, Hepco Motion, LG Motion, RS Components, Faro, HAAS Automation, Kawasaki Robotics, HPC Gears, Amada and many more. Alongside these are hundreds of companies offering a number of sub-assemblies, mechanical engineering components, machine vision systems, subcontract metalworking and components. Add to this many different business support services, for instance training and finance, and it’s easy to see why the show appeals to participants and visitors from all over the world.
Small and medium size businesses make up a large proportion of the 800 exhibitors anticipated for 2014. Show director, Phil Valentine, said: “One of the strongest features of the show is its accessibility; it’s a show for the small to medium sized engineering businesses that are the backbone of UK industry. Its accessibility allows it to reflect the real needs of business far more accurately than traditional national events, which tend to be biased towards large companies.”
Southern Manufacturing is also well-known for its free technical seminar programme, which runs over the two days in two theatres. Subject areas on the agenda for 2014 will include a look at advanced manufacturing techniques and materials, designing for commercial success, selling abroad, best practice and world class manufacturing, supply chain and SC21, demystifying patents and trademarks and current and future CE marking legislation.
