Anaerobic digestion (AD) has enormous potential as a source of renewable energy. However, it is critical for the industry to dramatically reduce costs to make it competitive against alternative green energy sources. Technology and process optimisation are imperative to this process.

Technological innovation in AD will be a key topic at UK AD & World Biogas Expo 2018, the world’s largest dedicated AD and biogas tradeshow, on 11th and 12th July 2018 at the NEC, Birmingham. The expo is being jointly organised by the Anaerobic Digestion & Bioresources Association (ADBA) and the World Biogas Association (WBA) and will feature hundreds of exhibitors demonstrating the latest technology to help AD operators find the innovations that will give their business a competitive edge.

On the first evening, the show celebrates excellence at the AD & Biogas Industry Awards Ceremony 2018, with entries this year featuring exceptional projects and innovation. Some categories will be highly contested with up to five nominations.

Bring on the benefits

The impact of optimisation on an AD plant’s bottom line can be huge, with digesters operating just below capacity sometimes losing thousands of pounds a month in revenue.  Equally, a minor drop in temperature can result in much higher methane loss while control of the bacterial environment makes a major difference to the quality of output.

The extensive conference programme at UK AD & World Biogas Expo 2018 features eminent speakers from companies leading the way in technological advances that prove the commercial benefits of operational enhancements.

Dr Mike Mason, Chairman of Tropical Power will be speaking about making AD cost-competitive with other technologies. You can read his full opinion piece here.

Other critical issues up for debate include:

  • How to get the most out of your AD plant
  • How to add value to your plant’s output through correct usage of digestate
  • What are the latest technologies to optimise your plant?

Specific highlights in the programme include:

“Improved biogas quality as a result of a controlled calcium nitrate dosage in anaerobic fermenters revealed by molecular analyses”
Dr Marina Ettl, Application and Product Development Director, Yara GmbH & Co.

“Optimisation of the 3-stage membrane process”
Dr Juergen Kube, Head of Technology, Future Biogas

“Economical and Agricultural benefits for farmers applying organic matter to soils”
Dr Alberto Confalonieri, Head of the Technical Committee, Italian Composting and Biogas Association (CIC)
