The Prime Minister Andy Burnham has unveiled a fundamental change to the education system today, with the launch of new technical educational routes. The new pathways will provide 14-year-olds with valuable early access to technical skills, work experience and connections with local employers.

According to Gov.uk, ‘The Prime Minister is determined to put technical education on an equal footing with the traditional academic path and to ensure there are ‘no dead ends’ for young people coming out of the education system.  This means providing high-quality technical education routes that are valued and respected by students, parents and employers.  In a message directly to students, he will say ‘whether you choose construction, coding or classics, you’ll get the skills you need and be given the respect you deserve’.

Paraic O’Lochlainn, VP of eMaint, a Fluke brand, supports this move and notes that the current skills gap we’re seeing across sectors such as manufacturing and construction have been worsened by previous governments failing to implement strategies to support young people considering these career pathways.

“Britain’s youth unemployment and growing skills gap have too long been treated as separate issues. The Prime Minister’s introduction of new education pathway is a welcome step – if overdue – towards fixing a broken education system that has remained largely unchanged since 2007. For too long, young people have been told that success means university, a degree and an office job. Everything else was quietly branded second-best.
“That mindset hasn’t served anyone. We currently have over a million young people outside education or work, yet industries such as manufacturing cannot find enough people to close this gap. This is not a lack of ambition from our young workers; it is a failure of imagination from the system around them.
“It is heartening to see this government recognise this issue and take immediate steps to alleviate it.  By changing the way education views career pathways, young people will be given the chance to spend time with employers and gain real-world experience. This is a strong step in the right direction. By providing structured workplace training, young people can gain key skills and build industry knowledge, growing their personal confidence in the job while also creating a stronger pipeline of skilled workers for the future. Trades will no longer be viewed as a Plan B.”
