Firms are being urged to take advantage of a UK-wide series of free employment law updates that will help them prepare for a number of important legislative changes set to hit employers from April onwards.

The free briefing sessions are being run by HR and employment law experts at EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation throughout March. They are part of EEF’s annual, UK-wide drive to help firms of all sizes remain safe and compliant and will take local business leaders through the latest legislation, case law and its implications for business. They will hear about the key developments in employment law and find out how to ensure their business stays compliant in the face of ever-evolving legislation.

This year’s update is more critical than ever as, from April 2017, legislation on gender pay reporting and the new Apprenticeship Levy come into force. EEF’s team of experts will take a look at how these developments will impact local employers and what compliance will involve.

Other April changes include increases to the rates of certain statutory minimum payments and changes to the tax treatment of certain employer provided salary sacrifice benefits. EEF’s legal experts will also look at the implications of recent decisions from the appeal courts, including disability discrimination cases relating to working practices, employer expectations and the management of sickness absence and stress.

The team will also shed light on the recent spate of high profile ‘worker status’ claims coming from the developing gig economy, involving new companies such as Uber, Deliveroo and City Sprint.

Lucy Atherton, legal compliance expert at EEF, says: “These free annual sessions are about getting local businesses up-to-speed on the latest legal developments that could affect their company. Firms are coming under greater scrutiny than ever before and it’s vital that they ensure they have the right policies and procedures in place.

“With critical new pieces of legislation like gender pay reporting and the Apprenticeship Levy coming into force next month too, our free briefing will be more important than ever in helping firms stay safe, compliant and unquestionably on the right side of the law.”
