Electrical and mechanical engineering firm Gibbons Engineering Group has been selected as an official partner of the Year of Engineering 2018 campaign.

The Year of Engineering 2018 is a government scheme to raise the profile of engineering among young people and encourage them to consider engineering as a career.

This partnership sees family-run Gibbons – based near Maldon in Essex – promote the variety, creativity and social value of engineering and the difference it can make to people’s lives.

Gibbons Director Matthew Gibbons said: “We’re challenging outdated perceptions of the profession as a ‘dirty hands’ job with a number of initiatives. Modern engineering embraces the latest technology, offers tremendous opportunities for progression and can take you all over the world.

“We hope that as a Year of Engineering 2018 partner we can show local young people what a great career it is.”

As part of its commitment to the scheme, Gibbons:

  • Welcomes engineering apprentices from local companies to its offices and workshops to gain invaluable experience
  • Marked National Apprenticeship Week (5-9 March) by interviewing apprentices past and present from across all areas of its business, with the videos published to the Gibbons website and YouTube account.
  • Is hosting an open day for local primary school pupils to visit its workshops and see exactly what electrical and mechanical engineering is all about, with hands-on activities that replicate some off the challenges faced by engineers.
