• The app will provide insights into Britain’s gas supply and demand, through interactive charts and maps updated with data from the National Gas GSO
  • The near real-time data demonstrates the scale of the British gas market, and the variety of supply and demand points across the country
  • The app will provide insights with regards to the supply of gas into Great Britain and follows the recent UK Government announcement regarding gas power stations

A new app that provides near real time insight into Britain’s gas demand and supply has been launched by National Gas.

The app was built by National Gas, who own and operate the 5,000-mile gas National Transmission System (NTS), transporting gas across Great Britain to power stations, major industries, storage facilities, interconnectors, businesses, and homes.

It will visually show data and insights from the National Gas GSO (Gas System Operator), which is responsible for managing this complex and important operation, for the nation and beyond, utilising advanced data and insights.

The app will update interactive maps and charts frequently with data from the GSO. With almost half (43%) of the UK’s natural gas produced domestically, the platform will display comprehensive data about where our gas comes from, where it is needed and what it is being used for, such as electricity generation, major industry, and storage.

The app builds on the successful Energy System Operator (ESO) app for the electricity network, to offer insights on the equivalent gas network. From September to November 2023, gas accounted for 34.3% of the UK’s total energy consumption, second only to petroleum at 39.1% and followed by bioenergy and waste at 11.5% and primary electricity (nuclear) at 6.5%.

Energy has never been higher on the agenda and National Gas believe in the power of engaging its customers, the industry, and wider stakeholders on this journey. The app will provide everyone with the opportunity to explore the data from the GSO, including the sources of gas into Great Britain and the demand for gas across the country.

Jon Butterworth, CEO of National Gas, said:
“Our app will be a powerful tool that offers data and insights into the gas system, filling a gap in the market for people looking to understand more about the role of our national gas network.

“Visibility of the scale of the national gas network will be particularly important as we look to repurpose our network to hydrogen as the country transitions to net zero.”

Minister of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Graham Stuart said:
“National Gas has produced an innovative app to improve everyone’s understanding of the gas network and the role it is playing on our path to net zero.

“With more data on the sources of and demand for gas in the country, this app will showcase the importance of gas to the UK’s energy mix and future energy security.”

The app offers an opportunity to understand the scale and importance of the gas system. Great Britain’s NTS is one of the most extensive gas transmission networks in the world, transporting vast volumes of energy every day, safely and reliably.

In the future, National Gas’ vision is to repurpose large parts of this network to transport hydrogen or carbon dioxide, supporting the UK to achieve its net zero target and deliver a clean energy future that works for everyone.

A greater awareness of our energy mix is vital to inform these plans for the Britain’s future energy mix. Through making information about the gas system accessible, the app intends to enhance the public’s understanding of the transmission system’s significance in transitioning to net zero – particularly with new fuels including hydrogen.
The app is now available for download on both iOS and Android devices here:
