SCADA system is the cream of the crop

Problem: Famed for its cheese production, Parmareggio Unigrana wanted to automate its Fiordalba creamery to help it become a major butter producer too. Demand for the region’s butter was up 22% in 2011, so the creamery wanted to increase production, guarantee quality and ensure efficiency.

Solution: The creamery is using Product4Automation’s Movicon 11 SCADA system to automate  the plant. The design and installation was carried out by I.T Technologies, a Movicon integrator in the region. The SCADA?system would improve the system redundancy and add a quality certification capability.

The delicate cycle used to process cream into butter is constantly monitored and recorded by the Movicon system to ensure compliance with European food safety standards. A NIRS (Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy) system working with the SCADA?system controls the product’s chemical parameters during the settling, ripening and churning processes. The butter is then sent on for packaging in all shapes and sizes, according to market demands.

The SCADA system is implemented on three Siemens S7 PLCs. One PLC manages the production process system, while the other two manage the CIP systems and the storage systems. Together they guarantee maximum security during the different production stages.
